With the defeat of the Separatists and the purge of the Jedi Order, Chancellor Palpatine - secretly the Dark Lord of the Sith - was free to declare a brutal new regime; the Galactic Empire represented the ultimate victory of the dark side of the force over the light. Totalitarian in the extreme, the Empire ruled the galaxy with an iron fist; its Stormtroopers were responsible for unspeakable atrocities across the stars, and Palpatine's enforcer, the infamous Darth Vader, became the face of fear the galaxy over. Possessed of an almost insurmountable technological and numerical advantage over its rival - the Rebel Alliance - the Galactic Empire kept the galaxy under its boot for over twenty years, before finally coming undone at the Battle of Endor.
